3 months

Dear Lauren,

You are three months old today, my love! It's amazing how quickly the last 3 months have gone, and at the same time how i can hardly remember my life before you. You're growing and changing every day. And you have such a strong and vibrant personality. I feel like you teach us something about you every day, and I am loving every minute of it. So at three months old, here is what you're up to:

Learning and playing: it is so wonderful to watch you discover your world. For several weeks now your favorite game is to have mommy or daddy kiss your cheeks. You smile and giggle every time. And then if we say "can I have kisses?" you'll open your darling little baby mouth and give us slobbery little kisses on our cheeks. You just amaze me, Lauren. You are so smart! You already can associate the word "kisses" with actual kisses. You've also started playing with toys! You are absolutely delighted when daddy or I shake a toy in front of you, and occasionally will hold onto it and shake it yourself. Your very favorite toy right now is a pink giraffe attached to a little mini blanket. Your whole face lights up and you get the biggest smile when you see it. You'll hold onto it with both hands and chew on whatever part is closest to your little mouth. Your other favorite thing at the moment is the Christmas tree. It makes you so happy we've started calling it Lauren's Tree :)

Teething: yep, I think you're starting to teethe. I think we're a ways from getting any teeth in at this point, but you're drooling like crazy and spend most of your awake time chewing on your hands. If you're not chewing on your hands, you're chewing on whatever you can- your giraffe, blanket, my shoulder, etc.

Feeding: we've all but said goodbye to nursing. You just don't want to. You can latch just fine now, but much prefer a bottle. Although you're much happier with a bottle of breast milk than formula. I've learned to accept that this is your choice and to respect it :)

Sleeping: there are days when I think we are making enormous progress on your learning to sleep on your own, and other days where I don't think we've progressed at all. About half the time you will sleep in your bassinet next to me at night, and the other half the time you want to sleep on my chest and no where else. You're my little cuddle bug :) even when i lay you down in the middle of your bassinet, its not long before you've scooted yourself over and are cuddled up next to the side of it. Naps are a different story though. You're not a fan of being set down to nap.. You'll nap on your own maybe 25% of the time... But when you do, boy do you wake up mad at me.

I love you so much, sweet girl.

Love,
Mom

I'm done!! .... I think....

I am officially done with school! As in, forever. I turned in my last assignment today. Finals are done. I'm 99.9% sure there isn't anything else I have to do. I am officially and FINALLY graduating from college (for good this time). So... How do I feel about the awesomeness that is this accomplishment? Meh. The dominant feeling is that I'm still bitter that my maternity leave was tainted with the heinousness that is your final semester of nursing school. That, mixed in with a whole lot of unbelief that I really am truly done. But here I am, Ashlee, RN, BSN. So in regards to school, what am I most proud of?
1. I had a baby in the middle of the semester and I'm still graduating! Pretty sure that makes me super woman.
2. I'm an RN. I really could care less about the BSN part. My licencse is a much bigger deal!
3. Um.... Repeat number 1 again.

So... Now that I'm supposedly smarter and a "better nurse" and whatnot, what did I learn in getting my bachelors degree?
1. Grades don't matter, graduating does.
2. I have absolutely no desire to ever do anything that having a BSN allows you to do. Like management. Bleh.
3. I really am truly happy with where I am in my career. Maybe someday I will specialize and be a psychiatric registered nurse. But that day won't come for a long, long time. But I know for sure I won't go to grad school.

Seriously though... After 21 years of school, I. AM. DONE.

*deep breath*

Rewind

A couple of posts ago I said more pictures were coming soon. Sorry it took so long. And I'm sure a lot of you have already seen some of these on facebook anyway. Oh and I'd love to give credit to our AMAZING photographer, but if I do that on the blog all of the interwebz will know where we live, and I'd rather that not be. Anyway, here are some more photos from Miss Lauren Emily's newborn photoshoot. She was 8 days old :)

2 months, 10 days

Dear Lauren,

You had your 2 month check up today! I cannot believe you are 2 months old already. The last 10 weeks have by far been the most wonderful of my life. You are everything to me and your daddy, sweet girl. We love getting to know you and watching you grow every day. I feel so privileged and so blessed to be your mother. But speaking of growing! Sometimes I think I can literally see you changing before my eyes. Here are your 2 month stats: 10 lbs 8 oz (30tth percentile), 21.25 in long (6th percentile), head circumference 15.5 in (56th percentile). Your doctor is so happy about the weight you've gained! You've nearly doubled your birth weight! :) and while you're a little short ( I love it!), you've grown 4.25 inches since you were born!

At 2 months old, you know exactly what you want and exactly what you don't. You love bath time! I think it's your favorite part of the day, which makes it my favorite part of the day too. And if possible, I think you may love your lotion and baby massage after bath time even more. You smile and laugh all the time. Nothing makes
Daddy and I happier than seeing you happy. You've recently discovered our TV and I think you may actually adorei it. You love to lay on the floor or ssit on our laps and watch/talk to the TV. It's adorable!you also love your mobile and it's so sweet how you reach for it. You still love being naked and would probably prefer to spend all day that way. And if it wasn't November and cold, I would totally let you- it just makes you so happy! your daddy is one of your favorite things in the world. You get upset when he's been at work all day, and super happy when he comes home. Your eyes will follow him wherever he goes!

What you don't like is waiting for a bottle. Or getting dressed. Or, as of today, shots. If I could have gotten the shots for you today, I would have in a heartbeat. Nothing breaks my heart like knowing you are hurting. That's an understatement. It shatters my heart into tiny little pieces. I know you need them though. It's good for you in the long run. And as your mother it's my jobt to take care of you and give you what you need. But when what you need causes you pain.... It's so hard.

Right now you're asleep in my arms and I absolutely love it (yes I am typing with one hand, lol). I've wanted to hold you for so long. Having you here is truly my greatest blessing. I love you more than absolutely anything. You are wonderful!

Sweet dreams, Little Love! I love you!
Love,
Mom

Time for an Update

Okay so I guess it isn't all that surprising that I haven't been posting a whole lot lately, but that doesn't mean I haven't been trying! lol. Lauren is amazing, and goodness does she keep me busy! Here's a little update on how we're doing:

Breastfeeding. I am SO happy (seriously, underline that.. SOOO HAPPY) to say we finally got the hang of it. Lauren is latching now without problem! Heaven bless lactation consultants!

Sleep. Oh boy. I know it's important to help her develop good sleeping habits. But after three weeks of rocking her to sleep, laying her down, and starting all over again within 2 minutes because she wakes up the moment you set her down.... I gave up. Swaddling didn't work. Not swaddling didn't work. Nor did music, or no music. Or so many other things we tried. Robbie and I were both just so tired. There were a few times I just sat in the rocking chair holding her and cried with her because I was just. so. tired. And so was she! But I learned something about my sweet girl... she's a tummy sleeper. Lay her on her back, and she's awake and crying within a minute. Lay her down on her tummy... and she'll sleep for at least 4 hours. 4 HOURS, YOU GUYS! I know, I know. BACK TO SLEEP. Babies are so much safer sleeping on their back. Which is why I am super anxious and check on her repeatedly when she's napping. I don't know what it is about nighttime though... sometimes she'll let me lay her down on her tummy... but more often than not, she won't let me lay her down at all. So the last couple of weeks Lauren and I have spent more than a few nights with her sleeping on my chest. If she's going to insist on sleeping on her stomach all night long, I'd rather her be as close to me as possible, and she insists on it anyway :) I love my little cuddlebug, but I'm afraid I'm creating a seriously difficult toddler bedtime situation. But our little bathtime, eat, fall asleep on Mommy and stay there for the next 5 hours routine is meaning I'm sleeping too right now!! And it feels soooo good. How do I give that up?

Growing. Lauren is growing like crazy! She fits her newborn clothes now, and has even outgrown a few of them! She has tiny little rolls on her arms and legs and this absolutely darling little double chin and cheeks. She smiles (well, she's been doing that since birth), she holds her head up, rolls over, and makes all kinds of happy and mad noises. There's nothing I love more than watching her grow, but it's just so fast. Is everything going to feel like it's going by so fast now? I don't know how to remember all the things I want to remember about this wonderful newborn stage, but I'm sure going to try.

Happy Due Date, Baby Girl!

Kinda weird to think that today was our due date. I fully expected to still be pregnant right now. Instead I have a newborn who can roll over on her own! Goodness I love this girl!

Lauren's 2 week checkup was on Monday, and she is doing so well! Her doctor had wanted her to gain 10 oz by the appointment, and she gained almost an entire pound! Our girl is now 6 lbs 3 oz and 18 3/4 inches long! And she no longer fits into her preemie clothes! I am one proud Mama :)

Here are a few more things we've learned about our girl this week:

Lauren loves: bathtime (and not just getting her hair washed!), cuddling (she sleeps so peacefully and much longer as long as she is in someones arms. If she's not being held she gets so fussy in her sleep), tummy time (usually), her swing, her pink fluffy blanket, music

Lauren does not love: breastfeeding (still...), not being held, the sound of a chip bag

Lauren's New Trick

Lauren is 2 weeks and 2 days old. Her due date isn't even until tomorrow! We knew if we didn't get this on video no one would believe us...

I love you, Squirmy! Mommy and Daddy are so proud of you!

Lauren's First Week

Our first week with our little girl has been so wonderful, and so exhausting! We are completely in love with her. Here's how it's been:

I didn't include this in my last post- because it wasn't about her birth specifically- but after being in my hospital room with me for awhile, Lauren spent about 24 hours in the NICU with hypoglycemia. We tried so hard to keep her blood sugar up with formula since my milk wasn't in yet, but she just didn't have the fat stores to maintain her blood sugar on her own. So my little baby had to have an IV and get poked in the feet over and over and over again. Seriously could have killed me. She's totally fine now, but it did cause one issue that we're still trying to get over... because she was introduced to a bottle so soon, not to mention a tiny feeding tube we tried to use in combination with breastfeeding and a syringe we tried to use with breastfeeding... breastfeeding is such a struggle.
Breastfeeding is a lot more work for her than a bottle, and a whole lot more work than opening her mouth while I squirt a syringe of colostrum into it, so we're still working on it. Our feeding routine is much improved over the past 48 hours... but it's still such a long, frustrating process for her and for me. We do a breasfeeding attempt, then the bottle, then I have to pump, and then clean everything. By the time I'm done, it's not long before we're starting over. It's tiring for both of us, but I am so determined to stick it out. Seriously though... labor was easy compared to breastfeeding. We'll get it though :)

I absolutely love everything about her and about being her mom. She is everything. Getting to know her day by day is so much fun! Here's what we've learned about our girl this week:

Lauren loves: Falling asleep on Mommy, eating with Daddy, skin-to-skin cuddling, being naked, being naked and swaddled, breastmilk in a bottle, having her hair washed, her hands

Lauren's first bath at home- see that look of pure contentment while getting her hair washed? Makes me just melt

Lauren does not love: Mommy's boobies (although it's getting better), bathtime

As for me, I am feeling really good. I'm still sore, but nothing that ibuprofen can't handle. Oh ibuprofen... how I missed you.

Here are some more pictures from our girl's first week!

Going home from the hospital- her outfit was waaaay too big for her 5 lb 4 oz little self

Big stretch! Seriously loves to be naked!

Oh my gosh I'm so in love.

Lauren's Birth Story

I was anticipating my little girl’s arrival sometime around October 5. Of course there is really no way to know when she would decide to come, but when I woke up on Saturday, September 17 and got ready for work, I had no idea what was about to happen.

At about 8 am at work, I used the restroom and realized I was starting to lose my mucous plug. It was such a minor amount of blood, I honestly thought “Well that’s unexpected, but this could still take a few days.” At 37 weeks 3 days gestation, I was certainly surprised my body was starting to prepare to deliver this baby. Robbie was also at work, so I texted him and said “Just thought you might like a heads up- I think I just lost my mucous plug. We may be having this baby in the next couple of days.”

I went about work as usual. At noon I was standing behind the nurse’s desk talking with several patients when I felt a sudden little “pop” and moments later a gush of warm fluid. I stopped talking mid-sentence as I realized what had just happened. I imagine I had a rather stunned look on my face. The patient I was talking with looked at me and asked “Um… are you in labor?” I said, “My water just broke” and immediately turned around and ran into the med room where I could be alone. I immediately called my boss and told her what happened. She asked me to call the other nurse that was working that morning and let her know what was happening and then to just leave. I called Robbie and told him my water had broken and he needed to head home from work. The other nurse came over, we counted the narcotics and I gave the fastest report of my life, and I headed home too. I called my midwife and told her my water had broken. I was not contracting yet at all (other than the very minor, non-painful, what I thought had been practice contractions I had been having for weeks). The fluid was clear and since I wasn’t really contracting she told me I could take my time, but that I needed to head to the hospital in the next hour because we wanted to start the antibiotics since I was GBS+. I hurried and ate some lunch because I was starving and knew I wouldn’t get to eat in the hospital, we packed our bag, called our parents and told them what was happening, and left.

Erica had called the hospital for us, so the nurses were expecting us when we got there. We settled into our room, my nurse checked to verify that my water had indeed broken, put in my IV (in my wrist of all places, how annoying), and checked my cervix. I was at 2 cm, 90% effaced, and Lauren was at a -1 station. We decided to walk to halls to see if we could get contractions going and my cervix to continue dilating. I knew since my water had broken, and especially with my being GBS+, that if I didn’t start contracting soon I would be looking at pitocin, and the natural, unmedicated childbirth I was determined to have would become quite a bit more difficult. Thankfully my contractions started as we walked, and walked, and walked. I wasn’t in pain at all, and with every contraction I knew that bag of pitocin was getting further away, which made me honestly excited for each tightening sensation in my abdomen. After close to 2 hours of walking, I was 4 cm dilated, still 90% effaced. Lauren was still at a -1.

At that point, Robbie and I decided to stay in our room, but I stayed upright, hoping gravity would help me out. When Erica got there a little while later, I was at a 4 ½, but contractions were now regular and getting closer and closer together. She suggested I get on the birth ball to try and open up my pelvis and see if we could get Lauren to descend a bit more. It didn’t take long to see just how effective a birthing ball can be. My contractions started to get uncomfortable, and I started using my surge breathing techniques I had learned through hypnobirthing. Robbie helped me breathe through each surge and I concentrated on relaxing my body. I listened to my body with every surge and reminded myself how important it was that I release any tension and let my body take over. As my contractions were getting stronger and closer together, Erica suggested I get in the tub to help me relax even more. I got in the tub and honestly, I can’t remember ever being more relaxed in my entire life. Robbie stayed by my side and poured water over my stomach over and over again. I continued to use my surge breathing through each contraction. My whole body felt so loose and relaxed- I even fell asleep for a little while. My contractions started spacing out more and more, and I could tell things were slowing down. I felt amazing in the tub, but honestly… I wanted to hold my baby sooner rather than later, so I made the decision to get out of the tub.

Once out of the tub, contractions started picking up again almost immediately. With each contraction I would close my eyes and concentrate on breathing and releasing tension. Robbie would stroke my arm and breathe with me. It’s amazing what that did to help me stay calm and relaxed. I started repeating my birth affirmations in my head. With my hypnobirthing practice I had been listening to positive birth affirmations on my iPod for months- but I didn’t feel like listening to them now. I’m not sure why, I just wanted the room to be quiet. It was so much easier for me to relax that way.

Erica checked me again and I was at 6cm. She suggested the birth ball again to help Lauren continue descending. I got on the birth ball and immediately felt an increase in pressure. I don’t know what it is about the birth ball, but it was very effective in opening up my pelvis. Within an hour I was at 8 cm. I stayed on the ball and with Robbie’s help continued my surge breathing with contractions and calm breathing in between them. This was the most intense part of labor for me. With each contraction I would grip Robbie’s hand on one side and my mom’s on the other and Erica would put counter pressure on my hips. I was trying to take all of the tension in my abdomen and release it through gripping their hands. Within minutes of being told I was at an 8, I felt the urge to push. “Felt the urge to push” is not really a very effective way of describing the intensity of what I was experiencing. My body just started pushing without my even trying; I couldn’t have stopped if I wanted to.

I got back on the bed and Erica checked me again. I was at a 9 ½. One contraction later and I was complete. I pushed for half an hour before Lauren was born. I listened to and worked with my body and it felt amazing. I felt strong. It was the most incredibly intense and amazing experience. Painful? Sure. But it was a good pain. It felt purposeful. The few minutes before Lauren was born her heart rate started to drop significantly with contractions. She recovered in between them, but it was a pretty significant drop. I remember hearing Erica ask the nurse, “Is that the maternal heart rate, or fetal heart rate?” I knew if there was any confusing whether the monitor was picking up my heart rate or Lauren’s, she was in trouble, and I suddenly became more focused and determined than I have ever been in my entire life. I heard Erica say, “Ashlee, I could do an episiotomy and we could have this baby right now.” I had talked with my midwives at a prenatal appointment about if and when they would do an episiotomy, and they said only if the baby was in distress, and only if they thought it would make a difference. Something inside my head just clicked at that moment, and I said no. I just suddenly knew I could bring her here on my own, and I knew she would be okay if I could do it soon. Looking back, the nurse in me thinks that was a crazy decision. But the mom in me knows it was the right one. Robbie and my mom both say they saw something in my face change at that moment. I started pushing, and I didn’t stop. At 12:17 am, with one big push, Lauren was born. That moment of feeling her slip from my body and knowing she was here is the single most incredible moment of my life and was worth everything. She started crying almost immediately, and her Apgar scores were 8 and 10. Erica placed her in my arms and the nurses were able to assess her while I held her. She was 5 lbs 7 oz of complete perfection.

There is not a single moment of birthing Lauren that I would change. Her wonderful entry into this world has changed me forever, and I love her more than words will ever say.

The Nursery

I officially finished Lauren's nursery last night! I am so in love with this room. I can't wait to bring her home to it!

The very first thing I did for her nursery was make the letters for her name for the wall... thus, the inspiration for the decor for her entire room is from a piece of scrapbook paper, lol. Kind of backwards, but it turned out great!

These blocks were so much fun to make. The cross stitch was made by my mom and was in my room when I was a baby. The bear is Robbie's childhood teddy bear.

Robbie got this for Lauren on his trip to San Francisco. It has the genus and species written next to each butterfly. I love it!

I heart my diaper bag!

All organized! I love it.

I'm ready for you, baby girl!

Countdown to Lauren: 3 weeks to go!

Full term. FULL TERM! Oh my gosh. I can't even believe we're at the point where I can honestly say Lauren could be joining us any day now! I am so excited to meet this little girl. What's funny is that it just hit me a few days ago that I really don't know when she's going to be born, lol. That sounds so ridiculous. Of course I've always known I wouldn't know when she would make her big debut, but being the list-making, planning and replanning kind of crazy that I am, I suddenly realized that she could be here before I'm done preparing. Or not. I could go into labor in the middle of the night, or early in the morning, late in the afternoon, when Robbie is at work, when I'M at work, when my house is messy, or when its clean, whether or not there are dishes in the sink or the laundry is done or I'm ahead or behind on my homework......

See I told you I'm crazy, lol. I suddenly had to go buy baby laundry detergent and start doing Lauren's laundry at midnight the other night. I was thinking about all these things and the very idea that I could go into labor before every sheet and blanket and onesie is clean... oh dear.... I don't even want to think about that! lol. Seriously... CRAZY.

I crossed two things off my list the other day though! I got my hair cut and my toes done! lol. I know that's silly, but I just really want to have cute toes when I'm pushing this baby out. haha. And I don't want my hair to be in my baby's face when I'm holding her. Anyway, because having cute toes makes me happy, here's a picture! I haven't worked since Thursday and the weather is starting to cool off a little, so my feet aren't swollen today! Well, not too much at least! yay :)

Countdown to Lauren: 4 weeks to go!

It has been such a crazy week! Time is seriously flying. On the down side, school started. Bleh. On the upside, I am soooo close to having the nursery finished. I've been holding off taking pictures until it's completely done. It's been an 8 month ongoing project, and I love how it's turning out. I can't wait to be able to say it's finished! Hopefully a post on that will be coming in the next few days!

I had another appointment today! So weird to think we're at weekly appointments now. Everything is going wonderfully! My midwives gave me their on call schedule, at least for the rest of September, so I know who to call when I go into labor. Now I also know what day I WANT to go into labor, lol. Lauren and I will be having a few talks about that over the next few weeks, haha. It's so exciting and kinda weird to think this little girl I've been talking to and feeling move around in my belly is going to be here in just a few short weeks! Excited doesn't even begin to describe it.

And I just want to put this out there... why is it that people think basic social etiquette does not apply in pregnancy? For example, you would never comment on a nonpregnant stranger's stomach as you're walking into the grocery store. But I've learned recently that if you're pregnant, people can say anything they want to you and it's apparently okay. Such as:
-Wow, you look like you're about to pop.
-Oh my goodness, you look like you're going to have that baby any second now.
-When are you due? Oh no... you look way farther along than that.
-Are you sure it's not twins?
-When are you due? Oh you'll have that baby long before then. You can tell she's already dropped.

LISTEN LADY! I THINK I KNOW WHEN MY OWN DUE DATE IS! AND YES I'M SURE ITS NOT TWINS! How rude! And by the way, that food baby you're carrying around is way the heck bigger than my actual baby! ah!

*sigh* Okay, now that I've got that out there I can smile and nod and say thanks next time some stranger at WinCo wants to tell me how huge I am. lol. (And for the record, don't worry... I don't think I'm fat. I love my baby bump!)

Countdown to Lauren: 5 weeks to go!

I really did have every intention of getting a good picture this week. And by good I mean not one I took of myself. But if there is one word to describe this past week, it is BUSY. So busy. And with school starting yesterday, I don't foresee it slowing down anytime soon. Nothing really new with me or Lauren this week. We're both getting bigger, and I'm trying to fight off a cold, but other than that, we're both great! So I wanted to use this week to talk a little bit about someone else!

Have I mentioned recently how truly amazing my husband is? Seriously, Robbie is wonderful. He's been so sweet about putting up with my mood swings for the past 8 months- and especially the last few weeks as they've become, um... more frequent, lol. He brings me a glass of water when I'm just too tired/lazy to get up off the couch and get it myself. He lets me run the air conditioner 24/7 even though it means he's living in sweats and wrapped in blankets in the middle of August and our electric bill will probably be atrocious this month. He built Lauren's swing and hung up shelves in her room because I just couldn't wait another minute to finish her nursery. He tells me I'm beautiful even when all I can fit into are his basketball shorts and old t-shirts and I'm just too exhausted to do my hair and makeup. And he lets me use him as a prop to get myself out of bed to pee 50 times a night. These may seem like little things to someone else, but they're huge to me. I couldn't do this without you, honey. Thank you! I love you! Like, a lot :)

Countdown to Lauren: 6 weeks to go!

Okay so it's been another week already! If every week goes as quickly as this one did, Lauren is going to be here before we know it! I know I mentioned last week how I'm officially feeling like I need to get everything ready for my baby girl's arrival... that feeling has gone into overdrive, especially in the last few days. But rather than call it an all out panic- which is kind of what it feels like- can I just call it nesting? Nesting sounds a little less crazy. Really though, I NEED her room to be absolute perfection. NEED. Even if that means the rest of my house suffers because I have a kitchen/office and a bedroom/where everything else goes to make room for the baby. For some reason I just need HER room to be perfect. I found a spider in her room today and about flipped out. Not because it was a spider. Because that spider DARED entire MY BABY'S room.
And I think every time I cross something off my to-do list, I add something else to it. School starts a week from today, and that list is about to grow extensively. Deep breath.... I will be okay.

Now for what's really most important here... Lauren is just amazing! I had another appointment today. She's growing perfectly. She's head down and likely to stay that way, which obviously makes me quite happy! They're estimating she's somewhere around 5 lbs right now, and if she gains 1/2 a pound a week from here on out, which is average, we're guessing she'll be close to 8 lbs if she's born at 40 weeks.

Other than the crazy, I'm doing well. I wish I could say the swelling in my feet has improved, but I worked a lot this week. When I got home after the third day Robbie was actually afraid of my feet, lol. I don't blame him, pitting edema isn't pretty. And as most of my maternity clothes are no longer fitting (seriously...) I'm pretty much living in either dresses, or Robbie's basketball shorts and t-shirts. And can I just say, as much as I've always loved air conditioning, I looooove air conditioning now. Air conditioning is one of my favorite things ever :)

Oh and I promise next week I'll try to get a picture other than a silly one I've taken of myself in my bathroom mirror, lol.

HypnoBirthing: Part 2

So in my first HypnoBirthing post I talked about why I wanted a natural, medication-free birth and why I've chosen HypnoBirthing as a way to help me do that. But the biggest question I get really is, "So what exactly is HypnoBirthing?"

HypnoBirthing, also known as The Mongan Method, is both a philosophy and a technique. It is philosophically rooted in the belief that 1) Women's bodies are physiologically capable of birthing. Pregnancy is not an illness, and birth is a normal, natural event. And 2) Fear increases tension, and tension increases pain. The HypnoBirthing technique teaches you to let go of any fears you have associated with birthing, and to relax your body and release any tension that could contribute to pain. It's something you do yourself. I'm not sitting there in a chair looking at some watch being waved in front of my face or something ridiculous like that. I'm not asleep, and I'm not in some kind of daze. I'm totally aware and in control. What some people compare it to is that feeling of getting lost in a good movie or a good book- you're so focused on something that you don't really pay attention to anything else and time just kind of goes away. It involves a lot of imagery, deep breathing, and positioning. And Robbie has learned a lot of things he can do to help me stay calm and to help me help my body to relax. I practice everyday- I work on getting myself to let go and relax (well... at least I try to do it every day.)

If nothing else, HypnoBirthing has taught me a wonderful way of dealing with my anxiety. I still have what I call my "anxious days" but since I started doing this they've been fewer and farther in between, which I'm sure Robbie and my mom are both grateful for :) And I like to think Lauren loves HypnoBirthing too! She's often pretty active and bouncy when I start one of my relaxation sessions, and by the end it's like she's gotten all relaxed and fallen asleep. Gosh I can't wait to meet this girl!

Anyway! So that's HypnoBirthing. I hope I answered some of the questions everyone has had! And I hope you don't think I'm totally out in left field or a crazy hippie or something. Although you might be a little right about the hippie part ;)

Countdown to Lauren: 7 weeks to go!

The weeks are officially flying by! I feel like I just wrote my 32 weeks post yesterday! I'm 33 weeks and officially feeling the panic of wanting to have everything set up, decorated, and organized before Lauren makes her big debut. I know it's silly, but I'm already planning what meals I should make and have ready to go in my freezer for our first few weeks when neither cooking nor going out to eat will be on my list of activities I'd like to participate in, lol.
As far as how Lauren and I are doing... she is just perfect! We had another midwife appointment and she is doing wonderfully! I know I say this every time, but her heartbeat is the most beautiful sound in the world! And she's growing just as she should be! As for me, I'm fine. My feet are still enormously swollen, and my hormones went into overdrive this week, but I really am doing very well! (Oh pregnancy hormones... let's just say I feel like I've hit puberty all over again, physically and emotionally. bleh). And my one, solitary little stretch mark has turned into, well... more, ha ha. Really though, I think the most humorous/difficult part about this stage of pregnancy is how I can't get up off the couch by myself anymore, lol. Robbie has to help me up almost every time. It would be frustrating if it weren't so funny!

Family Reunion Baseball Game

Robbie's family reunion was this weekend! It's been a lot of fun to see everyone! Saturday night was the annual family baseball game. Seeing as how I'm not exactly in sports playing condition, I decided to take pictures instead of play. All of the pictures were taken on my iPhone though, so try to ignore the grainyness.

I really, really tried to get a picture of Robbie and his siblings all looking at the camera. Thank you, Jana, for cooperating!

Zann is the cutest kid- I love that he played in his Mariners jammies.

What is it about a man playing sports that is so hot!? Even if it's with his family, lol. Love it!

HypnoBirthing: Part 1

My entire pregnancy people have asked me about my plans for the birth of our baby. Usually the question is "So where are you having the baby?" or "You're getting an epidural, right?" From before I even got pregnant, I knew the answer to that second question: no. No, I do not want an epidural. And no, by the way, I am not crazy. "Well you wouldn't have a dental procedure without laughing gas. Why would you want to have a baby without an epidural? What's the difference?" I laughed when someone said this to me. Mostly because when I had my four impacted wisdom teeth pulled, I declined the laughing gas. And second, because there is a huge difference. You generally have a dental procedure done because something went wrong... I'm giving birth to this baby because something went right. As my decision to have a natural birth with hypnobirthing has become a little more well known, the question has changed to, "So what's this hypnobirthing thing I hear you're doing?" This is my attempt to answer that question. I hope it makes sense to everyone, and I hope it's not offensive.

A few things about me: First, I like things that are natural. Second, I like to be in control. Third, I don't like drugs. It takes a lot for me to even take an ibuprofen. I know it's weird coming from a nurse, but I just don't. like. drugs. So when people ask why I do NOT want an epidural, those are some of my reasons. I don't think it's wrong to get an epidural. I don't think it's necessarily bad for you or for the baby. I don't think any less of people who make a different decision than I am. It's just not for me.

I want to give birth to my baby medication-free, and I don't doubt my ability to do it. My mom did it, her mom did it, millions of other women have done it. I'm not naive enough to think the experience is going to be anything remotely easy or pain-free. But it's my decision, and I feel like this is what's best for me, and my baby.

So! When I got pregnant I decided to start looking into various "childbirth methods."
(Again, I'm not naive- I know if I'm going to do this without drugs, I'm going to have to prepare myself for it). The two I looked at the closest were The Bradley Method, and HypnoBirthing.

I chose HypnoBirthing for a few reasons.
1. The philosophy behind HypnoBirthing is so much like my own. Pregnancy is not an illness, and birth does not have to be a medical procedure.
2. Rather than focusing on NOT having an epidural, HypnoBirthing focuses on HAVING a natural birth, and helping you gain confidence in your body's ability to do it. May not sound like much of a difference, but it's just so much more positive.
3. At the heart of HypnoBirthing is a method of teaching yourself to relax. And anyone who knows me knows I could stand a few lessons in relaxation.
4. The Daddy is so involved in the whole process. It's not just about me, it's about him too. Okay... it's mostly about me. I am, after all, the one who will be pushing a baby out of her hoo-ha. But it's not ALL about me. Robbie has to do the relaxation program right along with me. There are actually a lot of things in the relaxation methods I can't do WITHOUT him. And it teaches him so many things he can do to help me while I'm in labor. So he doesn't need to feel powerless or like there is nothing he can do but stand by and watch me suffer.

So there you go! Those are the why's behind my decision to have a natural birth using HypnoBirthing. This post has gotten really long though, so I think I'll save the whole "So what exactly is HypnoBirthing?" part for another day.

Countdown to Lauren: 8 weeks to go!

Oh my goodness it has been such a busy week! As evidenced by the massive amount of swelling in my lower extremities, 36 hours on my feet at work every week is becoming a little challenging. I woke up Thursday and didn't have a single pair of shoes that I could fit my hugely puffy feet into. So off to Target I went to find some shoes that hopefully would be somewhat comfortable. Thanks to all that water, my feet are a whole size AND A HALF bigger than they usually are. My mom thought it would be funny if I took a picture, but I promise you... no one wants to see that. Feet are gross, and my puffy pregnant feet are no exception. Haha!

And might I add, bending over to pick something up has officially become the most difficult thing I do now. Although, getting back up might be worse. I dropped something the other day and almost cried at the thought of bending over to pick it up, haha.

And... it finally happened. I have my first stretch mark. Sigh. Most surprising thing about it though is how totally unbothered I am about it. It's just part of the whole having a baby deal. And I've wanted her for so long; stretch marks are really nothing to complain about if it means she's growing and on her way here!

Baby Shower in Washington

While I was in Washington, Jenny and Grandma Susie and all of Robbie's aunts threw me such a fun baby shower. I absolutely loved it! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! And thank you to EVERYONE who came or dropped off gifts. Lauren is going to be so well dressed! It was so fun to see so many people that I rarely get to see. Love you all! (and thank you to Julie and Colleen who took pictures for me!)
